Tell a story about a place (real or imagined) using maps and other ephemera that you create. The final output will be a book, digital book, motion graphic or website. Begin by selecting a location and create a relevant story.
I chose to tell the story of my upbringing in Richmond, Virginia through the use of ephemera and geographically precise but, “interpretive”, abstract maps. For inspiration I looked at the kick-starter books from Nick and Nadine of Sonnenzimmer. They completely changed my methodology for the project. I took images from Google maps and painted, traced, drew directly over them, deconstructing Richmond to that exact environment I was raised. My ephemera included notes I had written as a child, song lyrics I remember playing on the way to preschool, pieces of report cards, and tracings of key buildings.
