Creative an 18 x 24″ folding book illustrating a particular manifesto. Consider the transformation of image and meaning as you fold or unfold pages of the document.
I chose Bruce Mau’s Incomplete Manifesto for Growth to center my project around. What struck a chord with me about it is that a lot of his messages transcend time. I chose to contrast particular points from the manifesto with James Joyce’s “The Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man”. In it a young man, Stephen Dedalus, struggles against external forces such as his faith, society, and his family in trying to live a life devoted to art. There is so much Stephen Dedalus could learn about growing into the artist is struggles to be from Bruce Mau’s present-day manifesto.
The main themes of Joyce’s novel are that the love and desire of beauty should not be a source of shame and that it’s necessary to leave behind that which hinders your ability to grow. This fit nicely with Mau’s words in my opinion.
